Jumping up is a common behavior problem among dogs. You may be annoyed by your excited, overly exuberant dog attacking you the minute you step through the front door.
But it can actually be dangerous for small children, people who have physical disabilities, some older people, and people who aren’t expecting your dog’s greeting. The larger breeds use this is a dominative posture. A common act in packs where the “lesser “members of the pack will try to question the Alpha’s authority to take charge.
The good news is that you can train your dog to stop jumping on people and start greeting everyone more politely.
How to Solve Dog Jumping Behavior
• Management: Management means you must control the situation so your dog doesn’t have the opportunity to jump up. Remind your dog who is the alpha in the pack. Use management techniques until your dog is adequately trained not to jump.
• Training: Teach your dog that they receive no attention for jumping on you or anyone else. Teach your dog to do something that is incompatible with jumping up, such as sitting. They can’t sit and jump up at the same time. If they are not sitting, they get no attention.
• Training Techniques: There are some techniques that you need to put into practice to have a well-behaved dog who is free of any kind of a behavioral problem, leave aside jumping behavior.
